What is this publication about?

Intraosseous hemangiomas of the jaws are rare benign tumours. When they involve the zygomatic bone (cheekbone), they may cause progressive swelling, pain and facial asymmetry. Dr Louis-Joseph Laurian and colleagues from the maxillofacial surgery department at Fondation Hôpital Saint-Joseph (Paris) report the management of a 43-year-old woman with a slowly enlarging, painful mass of the right zygoma.

For colleagues: surgical strategy

After diagnostic confirmation, the team performed surgical resection followed by bone reconstruction using a custom-made biomaterial implant. Autografts and standard alloplastic materials have historically been used for this type of bone loss; patient-specific implants offer new options in maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, particularly to restore zygomatic contour and symmetry.

At follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic and zygomatic symmetry was restored. The authors conclude that this approach is a reliable and reproducible method for zygomatic bone reconstruction after intraosseous hemangioma resection.

In plain language (patients and families)

A bone hemangioma is a benign condition — not cancer. In this case, a lump on the cheekbone caused discomfort. Dr Laurian's team removed the lesion and replaced the missing bone with a custom-designed implant shaped to match the face. Outcome: no further pain and a balanced facial appearance.
